One Truck That Bends the Rules of Warehouse Layout
Most forklifts turn the whole machine to face the racking. That is why aisles are wide: the truck needs room to swing round with a pallet on its forks. An articulated forklift does something different. It bends in the middle.
This introduction explains what an articulated forklift is, how it works, how it compares with the trucks you may already run, and where it earns its keep in UAE warehouses. If you already know the basics and want to compare Aisle-Master, Bendi and Flexi side by side, our guide to narrow aisle and VNA forklifts covers that.
What Is an Articulated Forklift?
An articulated forklift is a lift truck whose front section, carrying the mast and forks, pivots relative to the main body. When Narrow Aisle Ltd launched its Flexi, Warehouse News described the design as a central pivot point that allowed the truck’s mast to be rotated independently of the machine’s main body. The practical result is that the truck can reach pallet locations on both sides of an aisle without turning the entire machine.
Because the truck stays pointing down the aisle while the mast swings to the rack, the aisle only needs to be a little wider than the load. And because it rides on ordinary wheels rather than guide rails, the same truck can drive out of the racking, across the yard and up to a waiting lorry.
How the Articulation Works
Manufacturers describe the movement in different ways, and the angles differ:

- Landoll describes the Bendi as the world’s first 180° articulating mast, front wheel steered design.
- Flexi quotes up to 230° digital power steering across its range.
For an operator, the effect is the same: drive into the aisle, articulate the front unit to face the bay, lift, place, straighten up and drive on. Landoll also notes that because the rear end does not swing out when stacking, there is less risk of striking racking and stock.
A Short History
Articulated trucks are newer than most people assume. Warehouse News records that the Bendi was born in 1983, after its designer became frustrated in the late 1970’s with the limitations of trilateral head stackers. Narrow Aisle Ltd, founded in 1976, launched the first version of the Flexi in 1990 and has since sold more than 15,000 Flexis to companies in some 75 countries. Today Combilift’s Aisle Master sits alongside Bendi and Flexi as one of the three main articulated ranges.

How It Compares With Other Forklifts
| Truck | Typical aisle | Works outdoors? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Counterbalance forklift | 3.2 – 3.5 m | Yes | Goes anywhere, but the least space-efficient in racking. |
| Reach truck | 2.7 – 2.9 m | No (smooth indoor floors) | The standard high-racking truck; can operate up to 10.5 m high. |
| VNA turret truck | 1.5 – 1.9 m | No | Rail- or wire-guided and confined to the aisle. |
| Articulated forklift | from 1.6 m | Yes, on paved surfaces | Narrow-aisle density plus the ability to load and unload vehicles. |
Aisle figures for counterbalance, reach and turret trucks are from Mecalux; the articulated figure is the Combilift Aisle Master and Flexi minimum. Models vary: Landoll’s Bendi B30AC/B40AC works in aisles from 1.98 m, so always check the figure for the exact truck and pallet you will use.
Where Articulated Forklifts Earn Their Keep
From the loading bay to the top beam in one move
This is the defining advantage. Warehouse News reports that a Bendi can go directly outside with pallets and load them onto a lorry in one movement, bypassing the need for reach trucks, VNA or counterbalance forklifts. One machine and one operator replace a two-truck handover at the dock.

Narrow aisles in existing buildings
Combilift says its Aisle Master can work on any floor surface, indoors or outdoors, and quotes aisles as narrow as 1.6 m with lift heights up to 15 m. That makes articulated trucks a common way to add density to an existing building without re-laying floors for guided VNA equipment. Our guide to maximising vertical warehouse storage looks at the wider options.
Cold stores
Narrow Aisle offers a Flexi Cold Store truck developed for continuous use down to -30 °C, and Combilift’s Cold Store Aisle Master has heated cab windows to stop condensation when driving between temperatures. In a chamber where every cubic metre is expensive to cool, narrower aisles pay twice. See also our cold store forklift range.
Typical UAE users
In the UAE we see articulated trucks in high-density warehouses in JAFZA, Dubai Investment Park, Dubai South and KEZAD, and in retail and FMCG distribution, where both storage density and fast vehicle turnaround matter.
Power Options
Most articulated forklifts working indoors are electric. Combilift’s AC Electric Aisle Master covers capacities from 1,500 kg to 3,000 kg with masts from 4.3 m to 15 m. For heavier outdoor duty, the Aisle Master LPG uses a closed-loop fuel system, and Combilift describes it as the pioneer of LPG power in the articulated sector. If you are weighing up batteries for an electric model, our guide to lithium-ion and lead-acid forklift batteries explains the trade-offs.
Training and Safety
An articulated truck handles differently from a counterbalance or reach truck, and the UK HSE is explicit that an operator trained on one type of lift truck cannot safely operate others without additional conversion training.
In Dubai, this is now a regulatory point as well. Dubai Municipality’s External Circular 01/2026 on Safe Forklift Operation requires all forklift operators to receive accredited training from authorised institutions, including refresher courses, alongside 360-degree cameras, proximity sensors and daily pre-operation inspection logs. Establishments must comply no later than 1 January 2027. Operator certification schemes such as TÜV Rheinland’s in the UAE are aligned with Dubai Municipality’s scheme requirements.
Visibility deserves particular attention, because the operator is placing loads at height in a narrow aisle. A forklift camera or AI 360° forklift camera helps operators see the forks and the beam and meets the circular’s camera requirement.
Is an Articulated Forklift Right for Your Warehouse?
- Does the truck need to go outside? If yes, articulated is the only narrow-aisle design that can.
- What aisle width do you have, and what could you get to? Measure with your actual pallet size and orientation.
- How high is your top beam? Check the truck’s capacity at that height with your real load.
- What is the floor like? Articulated trucks are tolerant, but a sound, level floor still matters at height.
- How many hours a day will it work? That decides the power type and battery.
Renting or Buying an Articulated Forklift in the UAE
Liftronic rents and sells articulated forklifts from Aisle-Master, Bendi and Flexi across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, delivered from our Jebel Ali yard and maintained by our own technicians. Inspected used units, such as the Aisle-Master 44SHE and Bendi B315, are also available for sale. Renting first is a low-risk way to prove the layout before re-racking; see Combilift rental as well.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an articulated forklift used for?
Articulated forklifts store and retrieve pallets in narrow aisles and can also drive outside to load and unload vehicles. That combination suits high-density warehouses, cold stores and distribution centres that want one truck to cover both the racking and the dock.
Is an articulated forklift the same as a VNA truck?
No. A VNA turret truck is usually guided by rails or a floor wire and stays inside the aisle. An articulated forklift steers on its own wheels, pivots its front section to face the racking, and can leave the aisle to work in the yard.
How narrow an aisle can an articulated forklift work in?
It depends on the model and the pallet. Combilift’s Aisle Master and Flexi both quote aisles as narrow as 1.6 metres, while some models need more; Landoll quotes 1.98 m for the Bendi B30AC/B40AC. Always confirm the figure with your own pallet size.
Can articulated forklifts be used outdoors?
Yes. Combilift says the Aisle Master works on any floor surface indoors or outdoors, and Landoll says the Bendi B30AC/B40AC can work inside and outside on paved surfaces.
Do operators need separate training for an articulated forklift?
Yes. The UK HSE says an operator trained on one type of lift truck needs conversion training before operating another. In Dubai, Municipality Circular 01/2026 requires accredited operator training for all forklift operators by 1 January 2027.
