Why use a load stabilizer?

Every product that falls from a pallet is a loss, and in the case of glass bottles or heavy crates it is also a safety hazard. Operators compensate by driving slowly and braking gently, which cuts productivity.

A load stabilizer secures the load mechanically, so drivers can work at normal speeds with less product damage. It is particularly useful on uneven yards, dock ramps and loading bays where bumps are unavoidable.

How a load stabilizer works

1. The operator engages the pallet with the forks as normal.
2. A hydraulic cylinder lowers the pressure plate onto the top of the load.
3. The plate holds the load down with controlled pressure while it is lifted and moved.
4. At the destination the load is set down and the plate is raised before the forks are withdrawn.

The pressure plate is mounted on a frame above the forks. Its vertical travel sets the range of load heights it can handle.

• Flat frame plate: A general-purpose plate for cartons and shrink-wrapped goods.
• Crate and bottle plate: Shaped or padded for crates, cases and bottled drinks.
• Large plate: Covers the full pallet footprint for loose or small items.
• Padded plate: Rubber or foam faces for fragile or easily marked packaging.

How to choose a load stabilizer

1. Measure the lowest and tallest loads to set the opening range.
2. Identify the load type, which sets the pressure plate type.
3. Measure the individual items and full pallet footprint to size the plate.
4. Note the packaging: boxes, bags, crates, shrink-wrapped or unwrapped.
5. Assess floor conditions. Rough or bumpy surfaces may need a fixed backrest.
6. Decide whether side shift or fork positioning is also needed.
7. Check the forklift's capacity, carriage class, hydraulics and overhead clearance.

Capacity, clearance and compatibility

A load stabilizer adds weight high on the carriage and reduces the forklift's residual capacity. It also raises the overall height of the truck, so check the lowered height against container doors, dock levellers, building entrances and racking beams.

The truck needs one auxiliary hydraulic function for the stabilizer, and a second if it is combined with a side shifter. The capacity plate should be updated for the truck and attachment combination.

Safe use

A load stabilizer holds a load in place; it does not make an overweight or badly built pallet safe. Set the plate pressure so it holds without crushing the top layer, keep the plate fully down while travelling, and check visibility, since the frame can obstruct the operator's view forward. Loads still need proper wrapping for storage and transport.
